Newkirk Images 2002 Subway Calendar

March features a rarely seen view of the last days of BMT operation of the Fulton Street L (below right), with a work train of gate cars waiting on a part of the structure to be abandoned, while the nearly complete IND ramp that will connect the remainder of the line to the 8th Avenue subway of the "A" train is seen at left. (William Rugen).
Other photos feature scenes old and new: MUDC's on the Third Avenue el, shiny R143's on the old Myrtle el in Brooklyn, articulated BMT Multis running down the middle of Turnbull Avenue on the Canarsie Line, Lo-Vs in the Bronx, and R16s on a tall portion of the Jamaica el.
The unexpected is also here, with Staten Island Rapid Transit cars on the temporary tracks at Grant City in 1967, and a startling view of the freshly repainted body of one of the late lamented "redbird" cars having a last hurrah as a representative of Big Apple Culture on the Mall at Washington, D.C. in July, 2001, before becoming an Atlantic Ocean lure for fish and visiting divers.
Though a couple of older photos suffer from a slight shakiness of the camera, this new 2004 calendar will be a "keeper" for years to come.

The "pretty" took a bit of a back seat last year, as the 2003 calendar served as a memorial to the World Trade Center, each photo featuring the twin towers in some fashion.
With the 2004 calendar, variety and interesting composition come roaring back with, for example, the cover shot (above) of a train of R30 red cars shot at Broadway Junction and, for February, brand new R142 stainless steel cars at the IRT Westchester Yard in the Bronx. (below left--both photos William Mangahas).

Newkirk Image's annual NYC subway calendars are noted for their bright pretty color images, detailing current and historic photos of merit.
